It's best to start early, as the clearer morning skies offer the finest mountain views before the clouds settle in. A scenic one-hour drive (26 km) will take you from the bustling streets of Kathmandu to the peaceful village of Kaule, Kakani. As we drive, watch the urban scenery gradually change into wide stretches of lush green fields and quiet villages. Along the way, you’ll have plenty of chances to capture the beauty of the hills and local life on camera. Upon reaching Kakani, you’ll spot flourishing strawberry farms and trout fisheries, with the stunning Langtang mountain range standing proudly in the background.

Kakani is well-known for its close proximity to Kathmandu, popular picnic areas set amidst thick forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron, and its thriving agriculture especially Japanese strawberries and rainbow trout. After a brief break with a refreshing cup of tea or coffee, we’ll gear up to begin the hike.

    • Our hike starts with a visit to the Mountain Memorial Park, a heartfelt tribute established by the Nepal Mountaineering Association to honor mountaineers who lost their lives in the Himalayas. Take a moment to reflect and enjoy another hot cup of tea before heading deeper into the trail. The initial section of the hike is a bit steep but manageable. After crossing the checkpoint, the trail becomes easier and more enjoyable, leading you through dense forests of oak and rhododendron, offering occasional glimpses of the snow-capped peaks beyond. Along the way, you’ll walk past small farming villages, and if you visit during the right season, you might even get a chance to join in strawberry picking with local farmers!

While here, don’t miss the opportunity to sample and buy fresh rainbow trout, homemade strawberry products, or rhododendron-infused liquor, all of which are specialties of Kakani. This is also a wonderful chance to engage with the Tamang community and learn about their fascinating cultural traditions. Lunch will be a memorable affair, enjoyed against a spectacular backdrop featuring Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang, Gaurishankar, and Ganesh Himal ranges. You can also opt for a short detour to visit the Thai Memorial Park, dedicated to those who lost their lives in the tragic 1992 Thai Airways crash.

Finally, the hike continues through Suryachaur and onward to Gurje Bhanjyang, where our vehicle will be waiting for the return journey.

    • After the hike, we will drive you back to your hotel in Kathmandu. Before leaving Gurje Bhanjyang, take a few moments to snap some final photos and maybe pick up some local goods as souvenirs your support helps the local economy.
